Born 1899 in Barco – PORTUGAL. Died 1968 in Lisbon – PORTUGAL.
We know little about the life of Jaime Fernandes. Farm worker, he married Evangelina Gil Delgado at the age of twenty-two. He was committed for schizophrenia at the age of thirty-seven. When he died, his medical file as well as his drawings were almost all destroyed by the hospital authorities.
Only at the age of sixty, after more than twenty years of hospitalization, he began drawing. Fernandes represents mostly figures and animals, often intertwined to form a composite being from a multitude of lines drawn in ballpoint pen or pencil. A kind of spiderweb which surrounds the figures as well as composes them. The fusion between the animal and the figure is complete.
